The Constitution of India occupies a central place in the country’s legal and democratic framework. It embodies foundational commitments to justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, while establishing the institutional structure through which these values are realised in practice. Designed to endure, the Constitution has evolved through judicial interpretation, constitutional amendments, and constitutional conventions, responding to changing social, political, and institutional realities.
In recent years, the Supreme Court of India has engaged with a wide range of significant constitutional questions. Issues concerning reservation policies, the constitutional role of Governors and the President, the functioning of federalism, and the scope of fundamental rights have received sustained judicial attention. These developments reflect the complexity of contemporary constitutional governance and underscore the continuing importance of principled and informed constitutional interpretation.
It is within this broader constitutional context that the Constitutional Law Club at National Law University Delhi functions as a student-run academic forum. Established with the support of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) G.S. Bajpai, and under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Niraj Kumar, the Club was constituted to provide a structured institutional space for sustained engagement with constitutional law and theory beyond the formal classroom.
The Club seeks to deepen academic engagement with constitutional jurisprudence by facilitating informed discussion on judicial decisions, constitutional theory, and institutional practice. Through expert lectures, curated readings, and student-led discussion forums, the Club encourages careful and critical examination of constitutional issues from multiple perspectives.
As part of its academic initiatives, the Club is in the process of establishing a peer-reviewed Journal and an Academic Blog on constitutional law, aimed at promoting rigorous legal scholarship and responsible academic discourse. In the past, the Club has engaged with scholars such as Professor Mark Tushnet and Dr. Rajeev Bhargava, whose contributions have enriched ongoing discussions within the Club.
The Constitutional Law Club adopts a non-partisan and academically grounded approach to constitutional engagement. It seeks to function as an institutional forum for reasoned inquiry, committed to intellectual rigour, plurality of viewpoints, and sustained scholarly engagement with the Constitution of India.
